Accountant Resume Keywords: GAAP, Tax & Audit Skills
Accounting ATS screening is certification-heavy and tool-specific. The right combination of GAAP knowledge, ERP proficiency, and compliance keywords determines whether your resume passes the initial filter.
I have reviewed thousands of accounting resumes. The ones that pass ATS screening list specific systems, standards, and compliance frameworks. The ones that fail use generic terms like "accounting experience."

ATS Tips for Accounting Resumes
1. List certifications by full name and acronym. Write "CPA (Certified Public Accountant)" at least once. ATS systems at large accounting teams and public companies match on both the full name and the abbreviation. Same rule for CMA, CIA, and EA.
2. Name every ERP system you have touched. Not "accounting software" — SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, QuickBooks, Xero, Workday Financials. Include specific modules: SAP FI/CO, Oracle Payables, NetSuite OneWorld. ATS systems filter on system names, not general descriptions.
3. Include the accounting standards you work under. GAAP and IFRS are table stakes. Add specific codifications if relevant: ASC 606 for revenue recognition, ASC 842 for leases, ASC 740 for income taxes. These signal technical depth to both ATS and hiring managers.
4. Quantify close timelines and error rates. "Month-end close in 5 business days" and "zero audit restatements" are keyword-rich phrases that score highly. Include before/after metrics if you improved a process.
5. Match industry-specific compliance terms. A public company accountant should feature SEC reporting and SOX. A non-profit accountant should include fund accounting and OMB compliance. A manufacturing accountant should list cost accounting and standard costing. Generic terms lose to specific ones.
Keyword Strategy
Lead with Certifications
CPA is the strongest ATS signal for accounting roles. List it in your summary and skills section. If pursuing, list "CPA Candidate" with sections passed.
Show ERP Depth
Weak: "Experience with accounting software"
Strong: "Managed month-end close in NetSuite across 5 subsidiaries, built custom reports using saved searches, and administered user roles and permissions for 30 users"
Quantify Close Process
Accounting hiring managers care about close speed and accuracy. "Reduced month-end close from 10 days to 5 days while maintaining zero restatements" is a powerful keyword-rich bullet.
