Introduction

"Wrote code." That's what most engineering resumes say, disguised as "developed features" or "implemented solutions."

It tells me nothing.

Code is input, not output. What I care about is what that code did: Did it make the system faster? More reliable? More scalable? Did it reduce technical debt or enable new capabilities?

Engineering impact isn't measured in commits. It's measured in performance, reliability, scalability, and maintainability.

Performance metrics show how you made systems faster or more efficient. This improves user experience and reduces infrastructure costs.

What Counts:

  • Latency reductions: API response time, page load time, query execution time
  • Throughput improvements: Requests per second, transactions per minute, data processing rate
  • Resource optimization: CPU/memory usage reduction, query optimization, algorithmic efficiency

When to Prioritize Performance Metrics

Not every engineering project needs performance metrics on your resume. Focus on metrics when they demonstrate clear business value: user-facing improvements, cost reductions, or scalability enablement.

Use performance metrics for work that directly impacts users or bottom line: API optimizations, page load improvements, infrastructure cost reductions. These translate to business outcomes hiring managers recognize.

How to Calculate Engineering Impact (Step-by-Step)

Let's walk through a real example: optimizing a database query.

Scenario

You're a Backend Engineer. You optimized a slow database query that was causing page load delays.
