ATS Tips for Investment Banking Resumes

1. Spell out deal types explicitly. Do not just write "M&A experience." Write "mergers and acquisitions," "sell-side advisory," and "buy-side advisory" separately. ATS systems at banks match on specific transaction terminology, not umbrella terms.

2. List tools by exact name. "Bloomberg Terminal," "Capital IQ," "FactSet," "PitchBook" — not "financial data terminals." Each tool name is a separate keyword that ATS systems score independently.

3. Include deal values whenever permissible. "$500M transaction," "$1.2B acquisition" — these phrases tell ATS systems and human reviewers the caliber of deal you have worked on. If your firm prohibits named client disclosure, use approximate deal sizes without client names.

4. Name the models you built, not just "financial modeling." DCF, LBO, merger model, accretion/dilution, comps, precedent transactions — each model type is a distinct keyword. ATS systems at banks filter for specific model competencies.

5. Match bank-level terminology to the target institution. Bulge brackets expect terms like "execution," "coverage," and "capital markets." Elite boutiques value "advisory," "restructuring," and "strategic alternatives." Study recent job descriptions from your target firm before submitting.

Keyword Strategy

Use IB-Specific Language

Weak: "Created financial spreadsheets for company analysis"

Strong: "Built DCF and LBO models for $500M sell-side M&A advisory, conducting sensitivity analysis across 8 operating scenarios to support $380M-$450M valuation range"

Match Bank Vocabulary

Bulge brackets use slightly different terminology than boutiques. Goldman uses "execution" heavily. Lazard emphasizes "advisory." Match your target bank's language from their job descriptions.

Quantify Transaction Volume

Deal values, number of transactions, pitch books created, models built, buyers contacted. Investment banking is measured by volume and value. Your keywords should reflect both.
