Business Analyst Resume Keywords: Requirements, Process & Data
Business analyst roles span a wide range, from technical systems analysis to strategic process consulting. The keywords that get you past ATS depend entirely on which type of BA role you are targeting.
I have seen BA resumes fail because candidates use vague consulting language instead of specific BA terminology. ATS systems match on exact terms like "business requirements document" and "user acceptance testing," not on "helped define project needs."
Find exact formulas for turning BA work into quantified impact bullets in our Professional Impact Dictionary.

Keyword Combinations That Work
These multi-word phrases appear frequently in BA job descriptions and carry high ATS weight. Use them in your bullets and skills sections:
- "Requirements elicitation and documentation"
- "Business process analysis and improvement"
- "Agile requirements management"
- "Stakeholder workshop facilitation"
- "Current state and future state analysis"
- "Data-driven decision making"
- "Cross-functional team collaboration"
- "User acceptance testing coordination"
ATS Tips for BA Resumes
Spell out abbreviations. Write "Business Requirements Document (BRD)" at first use. ATS may scan for the full phrase, not just the acronym.
Mirror the job description. If the JD says "requirements elicitation," use that exact phrase. If it says "requirements gathering," use that. Same concept, different ATS match.
List your tools explicitly. Jira, Confluence, Visio, Lucidchart, SQL, Tableau, and Power BI are all searchable tool keywords. Create a dedicated "Tools" or "Technical Skills" section so these are never buried in bullets.
Include methodology certifications. CBAP, PMI-PBA, and CCBA are ATS keywords in themselves. If you hold them, list them in a certifications section and mention them in your summary.
Show progression through the SDLC. BA resumes that mention requirements, design, testing, and implementation demonstrate full-lifecycle involvement. Recruiters filter for BAs who can own the requirements process end-to-end.
Keyword Strategy
Match BA Role Type
Technical BA roles need more SDLC and testing keywords. Process BA roles need more BPM and improvement keywords. Data BA roles need SQL and visualization tools. Read the job description carefully and match the emphasis.
Show Requirements Depth
Weak: "Gathered requirements from stakeholders"
Strong: "Elicited requirements through 25+ stakeholder interviews across 4 business units, documenting 150 functional requirements in BRD with full traceability matrix linking to 80 test cases"
Include Both Business and Technical Keywords
The best BA resumes bridge business and technology. Include business terms (process improvement, stakeholder management) alongside technical terms (SQL, API, system integration) to show you can translate between both worlds.
Quantify Requirements Volume and Complexity
Generic BA resumes list "gathered requirements." High-scoring BA resumes quantify that work: number of stakeholders interviewed, number of requirements documented, number of use cases written, number of test cases traced. Volume signals experience. Complexity signals seniority. "Documented 200+ functional and non-functional requirements for ERP migration involving 6 business units and 3 third-party integrations" is specific, quantified, and keyword-rich. ATS systems weight requirement volume signals heavily because they separate analysts who work on small projects from those who manage enterprise-scale engagements. Always include the project scope, system type, and number of stakeholders involved whenever you describe requirements work. This level of specificity is what separates senior-level BA resumes from generic ones.
